The Tulsa Golden Hurricane made history in Stillwater on Friday night, beating the Oklahoma State Cowboys 19-12 at Boone Pickens Stadium.

It’s the first time in 27 years that the Golden Hurricane (2-2) has beaten the Cowboys (1-2), and the first time since 1951 it’s happened in Stillwater. Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes threw for 219 yards and a touchdown and Seth Morgan kicked four field goals in the win.

The loss for the Cowboys will create heat under his seat that Mike Gundy has never felt before s the program falls to just 1-2 on the season. Gundy and Oklahoma State has won just one game in their last 12 dating back to last season. The Cowboys are also now 0-9 when coming off a loss. That’s their worst streak since the AP Poll era began in 1936.

“I thought (Tulsa) did a great job early in the game with some of the concepts that we hadn’t (anticipated) on defense,” Gundy said. “Really, through the first quarter, they outcoached us.”

Hayes got his second straight start for the Golden Hurricanes in place of Kirk Francis, and went 23-of-36 and did not have an interception.

“I thought their quarterback played really well,” Gundy continued. “He’s a good little operator. Made some plays and was able to run and scramble.”

Tulsa led 16-3 at the half on the strength of three Morgan field goals of 27, 38 and 47 yards. He made another from 47 on the first possession of the third quarter to extend the Golden Hurricane’s lead to 19-3.

The Cowboys rallied … kind of … behind Zane Flores in his second career start, passing for 214 yards and running for another 56. He scored on a 5-yard scramble to narrow the lead to 19-9 early in the final frame. Logan Ward kicked a 49-yard field goal with 5:49 left in the game to narrow the lead further to 19-12.

“I know we caught ’em at a bad time and they’re struggling right now, but it’s all about us right now,” Tulsa coach Tre Lamb said. “That’s a huge win for our program, that’s a statement win for me and our staff and our administration and I told the team new Tulsa’s back, and I told the ESPN guys that we don’t want to be on the second page of the paper.”

Up next, the Golden Hurricane host the Tulane Green Wave (3-0) on Saturday while the Cowboys host Baylor on the same day.
