‘Hard Moments in Coaching…’ Cowboys’ Matt Eberflus on Return to Chicago – How to Watch, Betting Odds

by | Sep 18, 2025 | Blog, Dallas, Ohio

The adage says, “You can’t go home again.” Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, probably wishes that were true.

Eberflus and the 1-1 Cowboys head to Chicago this week to take on the 0-2 Bears on Sunday afternoon, and it’s not expected to be a welcoming environment for the Cowboys’ defensive boss. Eberflus spent most of the last three seasons with the Bears. That tenure ended last Thanksgiving after a loss to the division rival Lions that was largely the result of poor clock management by Eberflus.

He was 14-32 in Chicago in his only head coaching job, and in Thursday’s presser, said he “hasn’t thought about” the reaction to his return to the Windy City.

“In terms of going back to Chicago, we’re keeping the process and our preparation the same as we always do. … There’s always hard moments in coaching,” Eberflus said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “You’re always disappointed when you lose because you put so much into it. The players put so much into it. You’re most disappointed for the players. Once that settles in then you work to the next day, the sun comes up and you move forward. You learn and you grow and you keep going. That’s what true grit is. That’s what we’re all about.”

While Eberflus didn’t get many wins in Chicago as a member of the Bears, a win for the Cowboys would make the trip back much more memorable.

Both teams are dealing with some injuries, as on Wednesday, Cowboys corner DaRon Bland missed practice with a foot injury and fellow corner Trevon Diggs missed due to an illness. Tackle Tyler Guyton was limited with a shoulder and wideout KaVontae Turpin was limited with a neck.

For the Bears, the list is longer. Six players missed practice on Thursday. OL Kiran Amegadgie, LB T.J. Edwards, DB Kyler Gordon, DB D’Marco Jackson, DB Jaylon Johnson and DB Jaylon Jones were all out, while DL Grady Jarrett and RB D’Andre Swift were listed as limited. WR Jahdae Walker was a full participant.
