The Dallas Cowboys narrowly escaped a visit from the New York Giants on Sunday with a 40-37 overtime win.
After an almost as narrow a loss in Philadelphia the week prior, Dallas and coach Brian Schottenheimer hope to continue the momentum they’ve built against New York as they travel to the Windy City for a Week 3 road contest against the struggling Bears.
Dallas still has its issues, namely on defense, after giving up 450 passing yards to Russell Wilson last week, while wideout Malik Nabers had his way with the secondary at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys failed to pressure Wilson, possibly a by-product of a trade that sent Micah Parsons to Green Bay via trade just before the season started.
“It was not the standard,” Schottenheimer said. “I think there are a lot of things we can clean up. I think that’s what I’m excited about. This is not a multiple-week thing. This is something that we think we can correct. I felt like it was a lot of different pieces, a lot of different parts.”
In the department of possible distractions, Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus returns to the city that virtually ran him out of town after the Bears lost to the Lions on Thanksgiving last year, when Eberflus grossly mismanaged the clock at the end of the game. He became the first Bears coach to be dismissed mid-season. It didn’t take him long to realize he wanted right back in the game this year rather than taking time off.
“I love coaching players,” he said. “I love working with the players. And that’s something that I’ve always loved to do and I wanted to get back in.”
Schottenheimer considered the Cowboys fortunate to have Eberflus on staff.

“No. 1, he’s a terrific football coach,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s an incredible man. Strong Christian, just a good person. He and I have competed a lot, but I’ve loved getting to know his wife and his daughters. I think that’s important. But in terms of this week, it’s no different. He’s put together a hell of a plan with his defensive staff.”
The Dallas offense and quarterback Dak Prescott hope to tee off on the Bears’ defense that’s allowed 73 points in the past five quarters of play. Prescott has thrown for 549 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while completing 68.6 percent of his passes through two games.
