The 154th Open Championship heads into the weekend with Lucas Herbert sitting atop a leaderboard almost nobody could’ve predicted. Herbert torched Royal Birkdale with a historic 8-under 62 on Friday, tying the lowest round ever recorded in a men’s major. He’ll begin Moving Day at 8-under, two shots ahead of Cameron Young, Ryan Gerard and first-round leader Jackson Suber.
Herbert wasn’t alone in making history. Sam Burns also fired a 62, punctuating his round with a bunker hole-out at the 18th. Burns enters Saturday at 5-under alongside Si Woo Kim and Bryson DeChambeau, whose second-round score was changed to a 68 after he received a two-stroke penalty for improving the area of his intended swing.

The leaderboard is packed tightly enough that the Claret Jug remains available to nearly anyone who survives Saturday. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler is lurking four shots behind Herbert at 4-under after consecutive rounds of 68. Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre, Matt Wallace and Alex Fitzpatrick are also at 4-under, giving the home crowd several legitimate reasons to dream. Rory McIlroy bounced back from an opening 72 with a 67, but at 1-under he’ll need an aggressive Moving Day charge to close the seven-shot deficit.

Johnny’s featured Saturday matchup card backs Patrick Cantlay over Chris Gotterup at +102 and Collin Morikawa over Rory McIlroy at +125. Cantlay’s steady temperament makes him appealing in a head-to-head format where avoiding doubles can matter more than chasing highlight-reel birdies. Morikawa’s precise iron play also provides an intriguing matchup against McIlroy, who may feel pressure to attack pins and manufacture a low round after beginning the weekend well behind Herbert.

Several major champions won’t be around for the weekend. The cut eliminated Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick, Aaron Rai, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, Cameron Smith and Padraig Harrington. Spieth’s exit was especially jarring at the venue where he captured the 2017 Open Championship.
Herbert owns the lead, but Scheffler, DeChambeau, Fleetwood and a crowded American chasing pack are close enough to turn Saturday into absolute chaos. Johnny’s Saturday Matchups are presented by Orion Golf and Tom’s Town Distilling Co.—and as the card says, if you’re not following, you’re not winning.
