On Saturday, the SMU Mustangs will take the field against the TCU Horned Frogs for the 104th – and maybe last time ever.
As has been the case across the college football landscape in recent years, longtime rivalries are being lost to conference realignment … and money.
The Mustangs and Horned Frogs first met in 1896, and on Saturday, they could meet for the final time. With TCU a member of the Big 12 and SMU now in the ACC, there are no scheduled meetings between the two schools, which are separated by just 39 miles.

That could certainly change, but for now, there’s nothing on the books. That means that the winner of Saturday’s matchup at Amon G. Carter Stadium could hold the Iron Skillet into eternity.
Now, to the game…
SMU is 2-1 and, following the loss, has lost its top 25 ranking. Once again, the team is led by quarterback Kevin Jennings, who has thrown for at least 260 yards in every game this season while completing 70.5 percent of his passes. He’s helped in the running game with a typical Rhett Lashlee balanced offensive attack.

UCLA transfer T.J. Harden has a combined 211 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 6.2 yards per carry the past two weeks.
Defense has been sketchy, however, for the Mustangs.
SMU struggled against Baylor last week and allowed 440 passing yards and gave up a 14-point lead in the last six minutes of the game. Missouri State threw for 275 and frequently found itself inside Mustang territory.
The Horned Frogs are 2-0 and could break the top 25 with a win on Saturday.
Josh Hoover is off to a tremendous start under center, averaging 310.5 passing yards per game with a completion percentage of 76.2, and boasting a 6-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Hoover is helped by an offensive line that hasn’t allowed a sack through two full games.
