Can the Return of DeMarvion Overshown Save the Cowboys’ Defense? … and When?

by | Sep 16, 2025 | Blog, Dallas

For all the issues the Dallas Cowboys have had this season, they still sit a 1-1 and are just a CeeDee Lamb dropped pass or two against the Eagles from a perfect 2-0 mark. I know what you’re thinking … “Spoken like a true, delusional Cowboys fan…” Well, maybe so, but it remains a fact.

While the Cowboys attempt to figure out how to survive on defense in the secondary with a still-injured Trevon Diggs and a struggling Kaiir Elam, there could be help on the way with regard to the Dallas pass rush.

And no, we’re not talking about the arrival of Jadeveon Clowney, although we believe that will help.

But the biggest impact could come with the return of DeMarvion Overshown. The former Texas Longhorns pass rusher is still on the PUP list as he recovers from a knee injury suffered in Week 14 last season against the Bengals. And not just any knee injury. Overshown tore his ACL, PCL and MCL, and probably a lot of other “CLs” we don’t know about. That, after already suffering a torn ACL in the preseason of his rookie campaign in 2023.

But good news, Cowboys fans, as it appears his return is imminent, and he recently hinted during a team event.

The unofficial goal was for Overshown to return for Thanksgiving in Week 13. And that might still be the case, but Overshown also won’t commit to a date.

“I don’t want to say that’s the target date, but I feel like I’ll be playing football before Thanksgiving with the team,” Overshown said.

Since arriving in Dallas in the third round in 2023, Overshown has appeared in 13 games with 12 starts and has tallied 90 total tackles with 56 solo, five sacks, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery, four passes defended and a pick-6.

The Cowboys could certainly use some more production in the pass rush, too. We’ll see if Overshown can make a difference.
