FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys are either a very precarious 1-1 on the season, or a play or two away from 2-0, depending on how you look at it.
But one thing is for sure: the Cowboys’ 2025 pass coverage needs a lot of work. And that’s putting it nicely. Dallas surrendered 450 yards passing to Russell Wilson on Sunday, two yards shy of his career-best, a week after he posted just 168 against the Commanders’ defense.
Yes, the team is dealing with injuries. Yes, Trevon Diggs is a shell of his former self, for whatever reason. Also, yes, DaRon Bland is still sidelined and unavailable. But Dallas made a trade for veteran Kaiir Elam this offseason in an attempt to shore up depth in the secondary for that very reason. And somehow, the Cowboys’ diligence in that matter has somehow backfired.
Per NFL Pro, Elam has allowed an NFL-worst 232 receiving yards through the two games this year. Pro Football Focus gave Elam a grade of 58.2 in the Giants game. Now, to be fair, pretty much everyone in the secondary sucked. So this isn’t all on Elam.
But he has to be better. And per Elam himself, maybe even less is on him than we all think.
He took to Instagram to defend himself and to invoke his head coach’s mantra.

Dallas heads to Chicago to face the Bears this week. Their passing game is atrocious. The Cowboys and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus (who returns to the team that fired him last year) have a week to figure out how to make this work. I wish we all were as optimistic as Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones, who recently addressed Bland’s injury on 105.3 The Fan.
“I really do think we’ll be fine. I think we will be on the short end of the timeline, and it should hopefully just be a couple of games,” Jones said.
But alas, Bland might still be a couple of weeks out, which might be better off for him in the long run. But in the meantime, we’re stuck watching Diggs get beat by 10 yards on fly patterns. No bueno.
