Rangers Hire Skip Schumaker as New Manager in Bold Post-Bochy Move

The Texas Rangers are officially entering a new era. The team announced Friday night that it has hired Skip Schumaker as its next manager, locking him in with a four-year contract to replace World Series-winning skipper Bruce Bochy.

Schumaker, 45, won National League Manager of the Year in 2023 after leading the Miami Marlins to an 84–78 record and a postseason berth—just the fourth in franchise history. He parted ways with the Marlins following a disastrous 62–100 campaign in 2024, largely due to front-office shakeups and a gutted roster.

Schumaker had been quietly working behind the scenes as a special advisor to Texas since November 2024—a role many insiders saw as a “manager-in-waiting” scenario. On Friday, Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young confirmed the team had been focused on internal options, and Schumaker ultimately got the nod.

This hiring brings the franchise full circle. In the same year (2023) that Bochy helped deliver Texas’ first-ever World Series championship, Schumaker made noise in the National League, earning widespread respect for his leadership in Miami.

Earlier in the week, the 70-year-old Bochy—the winningest active manager in baseball at the time—mutually agreed to step down after completing his three-year contract. His final season ended with an uninspiring 81–81 record.

While Bochy brought veteran leadership and postseason pedigree, the Rangers now shift to a younger, energetic clubhouse leader in Schumaker, who is known for player development, tactical flexibility, and strong clubhouse relationships.

This move signals a long-term vision for the Rangers. With a young core in place and championship expectations still looming, Schumaker’s challenge will be clear: sustain postseason contention in the post-Bochy era—and do it with a team ready to win now.
