Rory McIlroy’s FedExCup Playoffs began with a stunning dud at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The former FedExCup winner finished 8 over at TPC Southwind, failed to break par in all four rounds and placed 66th in the 68-player field.

Now he has only a few days to rebuild his swing before the BMW Championship.

McIlroy arrived in Memphis without playing a competitive round since The Open, and the extended layoff showed. He never looked comfortable on the par-70 course, struggling to generate the elite tee-to-green performance that normally separates him from the field.

Sunday brought more frustration. McIlroy closed with a 2-over 72 after another shaky opening stretch, although five birdies across his final 10 holes prevented the round from becoming even uglier.

The statistics revealed just how far his game slipped. McIlroy ranked 62nd out of 68 players in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and 65th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee. For one of golf’s most powerful and accomplished drivers, those numbers were nearly unrecognizable.

McIlroy acknowledged that mechanical thoughts began consuming too much of his attention. Instead of selecting a target and committing to the shot, he found himself worrying about swing positions and timing. That uncertainty left him searching for answers as the tournament progressed.

His disappointing finish won’t end his FedExCup run. McIlroy entered the week ranked 12th in the standings and was projected to drop only two positions to No. 14. He’s also safely qualified for the 30-player TOUR Championship, regardless of what happens at the BMW Championship.

But simply advancing isn’t McIlroy’s goal. He’s trying to capture an unprecedented fourth FedExCup title and his first since 2022. To have any realistic chance, he’ll need a dramatic improvement when the playoffs move to Bellerive Country Club.

McIlroy has limited competitive experience at Bellerive. His only previous tournament there came during the 2018 PGA Championship, when he finished tied for 50th as Brooks Koepka claimed the title.

After briefly returning home, McIlroy plans to travel to Bellerive on Tuesday and work with longtime swing coach Michael Bannon and caddie Harry Diamond.

The new tournament provides a clean leaderboard, but it doesn’t erase what happened in Memphis. McIlroy remains alive in the FedExCup race. Whether his swing is ready to join him is now the biggest question entering the BMW Championship.
