The Utah Championship may not be a staple on the PGA Tour, but it certainly will provide many interesting stories as the Tour continues its fall season.
It may not be the bright lights and long nights in Las Vegas, but by looking at the golf course and surroundings, you couldn’t tell you weren’t in Sin City.
Unless you’re a die-hard golf fan, the fall season brings players that might not be household names but undoubtedly have many reasons and things to play for.
After the first round, the story lines are in abundance.
Four players, including Europeans Thorbjorn Olesen and Jesper Svensson, led the way at 6-under. Olesen, a Ryder Cup player in 2018, has had a mixed year, sitting at No. 116 on the FedEx Cup list.
Svensson, an up-and-coming Swedish player who has been in contention throughout the season, sits at No. 115 in the FedEx Cup rankings.
David Lipsky now sits right on the top 100 bubble at No. 99, feels right at home playing desert golf as a resident of Las Vegas.
Austin Cook, a late entry into the event, needs to continue his good play as an injury-riddled year puts him at No. 204 on the Fed Cup list.
A few story lines to watch out for this week include defending champ Matt McCarty, who sits at 2-under and could accomplish a rare feat by winning in back-to-back years for a PGA Tour event in its first two seasons.
The return of Sahith Theegala is full of mysteries as the newly engaged rising star begins his comeback from wrist surgery. The leaderboard is filled with all types of players, which will provide many more storylines as the tournament continues.
Watch for potential low rounds and someone coming from back of the pack, as the tournament should continue to let the players make birdies on the picturesque Black Desert Resort Course through the final rounds.
