The Cleveland Browns have reshuffled their quarterback depth chart—but the shakeup still leaves Shedeur Sanders glued to the bottom.
In a surprising move, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that rookie Dillon Gabriel is now the team’s starting quarterback, bumping veteran Joe Flacco to the No. 2 spot. But there was no movement for Sanders, who remains the third-string quarterback despite his confident public claims that he’s better than some current NFL starters.

When pressed on the depth chart decision, Stefanski stayed tight-lipped.
“Joe’s the backup,” he repeated multiple times, stonewalling questions about Sanders entirely.
It’s a sharp contrast from Sanders’ own stance. The former Colorado standout has exuded confidence all offseason, claiming he’s ready to make the leap and prove doubters wrong. But clearly, the Browns’ coaching staff isn’t buying in—at least not yet.

Whether it’s a matter of readiness, playbook grasp, or internal politics, Stefanski’s refusal to even address Sanders by name speaks volumes. While injuries or poor performance could eventually open the door for Sanders, for now, it’s clear the Browns are hitting the gas on Gabriel—and leaving the Sanders hype train parked on the sideline.
The Browns and Vikings will kick off from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET as Gabriel finally gets his feet wet in the NFL.
