Nick Fortes collected four hits while Ryan Vilade and Richie Palacios homered as the Rays crushed Cleveland 11-3 behind Shane McClanahan.

The Tampa Bay Rays didn’t need their biggest names to carry the offense Friday night. The bottom half of the lineup grabbed the game by the throat instead.

Nick Fortes matched a career high with four hits, Ryan Vilade and Richie Palacios launched home runs, and Tampa Bay hammered the Cleveland Guardians 11-3 in a runaway victory. The Rays’ Nos. 4 through 9 hitters combined to go 13-for-26 with 10 RBIs, turning what looked like a competitive game into a full-scale demolition.

Vilade started the damage in the second inning, crushing his eighth homer of the season to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead. Cleveland briefly pushed back when Chase DeLauter and Brayan Rocchio delivered doubles in the fourth, cutting the margin to one.

That was the Guardians’ last real moment of hope.

The Rays sent the first six batters of the fourth inning to base and stretched the lead to 5-1, knocking starter Joey Cantillo out after just 3⅔ innings. Cantillo was charged with five runs and fell to 8-6 as Cleveland’s pitching staff struggled to stop the avalanche.

Fortes was right in the middle of everything.

The catcher drove in two runs, scored twice and extended his hitting streak to five games. He’s now 11-for-19 during that stretch, a blistering run that’s given Tampa Bay unexpected production from the lower portion of the order. His seventh-inning double brought home Ben Williamson and put another dent in Cleveland’s chances.

Junior Caminero also delivered an RBI single in the sixth, with Fortes scoring after an error at the plate by Austin Hedges. Chandler Simpson added a sacrifice fly before Palacios ended any remaining suspense with a three-run homer in the eighth.

While the offense was piling on, Shane McClanahan handled his business.

The left-hander allowed only one run on two hits over five innings, striking out three and walking two. McClanahan improved to 9-6 overall and 7-1 in nine home starts, continuing to make Tropicana Field a miserable place for opposing hitters.

Chris Roycroft covered the final three innings for his first career save, allowing two runs on four hits. Hedges provided Cleveland’s last bit of offense with a two-run homer in the ninth, but by then the game had been over for a while.

The Guardians have now dropped three straight.

Tampa Bay didn’t just beat Cleveland. It overwhelmed the Guardians with depth, pressure and a lineup that refused to offer an easy out.
