Eugenio Suárez tied Eric Davis on Cincinnati’s home run list and powered the Reds past St. Louis with a dramatic seventh-inning shot.

Eugenio Suárez delivered the kind of swing the Cincinnati Reds have desperately needed against the National League Central.

With Cincinnati trailing the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh inning Friday night, Suárez crushed a two-run homer to left-center and flipped the game in an instant. The 435-foot blast gave the Reds a 3-2 lead and helped secure a 4-2 victory that felt much bigger than one ordinary July win.

It was also a piece of franchise history.

Suárez’s home run was the 203rd of his Reds career, moving him into a tie with Eric Davis for 10th place on Cincinnati’s all-time list. Johnny Bench remains the franchise leader with 389, but Suárez’s latest milestone gave the crowd another reason to explode.

The timing couldn’t have been better.

Cincinnati entered the night with a brutal 7-22 record against NL Central opponents, the worst divisional winning percentage in baseball. The Reds have repeatedly found ways to stumble inside their own neighborhood, but Friday’s comeback offered a different ending.

Sal Stewart started the decisive rally with a single before Suárez attacked George Soriano with two outs. The ball disappeared deep into the left-center seats, and a Cincinnati offense that had spent much of the night chasing St. Louis suddenly had control.

Tyler Stephenson had given the Reds an early 1-0 lead with a ground-rule double that scored JJ Bleday in the fourth. Stephenson and Stewart each finished with two hits and an RBI, providing crucial support around Suárez’s knockout blow.

Rhett Lowder gave Cincinnati five solid innings, allowing two runs while keeping the Cardinals quiet early. He retired the first nine hitters and had faced the minimum through four before St. Louis finally broke through in the fifth.

Blaze Jordan’s two-run double briefly put the Cardinals ahead 2-1, but the advantage didn’t survive Suárez’s next trip to the plate.

Julian Garcia earned the victory after striking out the only batter he faced. Emilio Pagán slammed the door with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth, recording his 10th save.

St. Louis starter Dustin May deserved a better result after allowing one run and striking out eight over six innings. The Cardinals’ bullpen didn’t hold it.

For Cincinnati, that’s not a problem worth apologizing for.

The Reds have spent too much of the season getting bullied within the division. On Friday, Suárez finally punched back.
