In the lead-up to Sunday’s clash between the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers, a seemingly innocuous compliment from 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh sparked unexpected friction.
Saleh praised the Jaguars’ coaching staff for their ability to “legally steal signals,” a comment meant to highlight Jacksonville’s preparation and attention to detail. But Jaguars head coach Liam Coen didn’t take it that way.

Following the Jaguars’ 26-21 victory, Coen sought out Saleh during postgame handshakes to address the remark. Witnesses say the exchange grew heated and that Coen had to be steered away before the situation escalated further. While nothing turned physical, the moment added an unexpected layer of drama to an already intense game.
In his postgame press conference, Coen downplayed the interaction, saying only, “We’ll keep that between us.”
Sources close to Saleh say his intention was never to accuse the Jaguars of any wrongdoing. Instead, he viewed the staff’s ability to pick up on tendencies and communication as a testament to their film study and sideline awareness. Nonetheless, the phrasing rubbed Coen the wrong way, especially given his fiery reputation among some league insiders.

Saleh is expected to clarify his comments the next time he speaks to the media, emphasizing that he was not implying any rule-breaking and acknowledging that his choice of words may have unintentionally created that impression.
Both teams now turn the page to their next opponents—but don’t be surprised if this small controversy lingers just a little longer.
