Dallas lands Joey Porter Jr. from Pittsburgh for two draft picks, betting the 26-year-old corner can stabilize a struggling defense now and beyond.
The Dallas Cowboys have finally made the kind of defensive move Jerry Jones spent much of the offseason hinting was coming.
Dallas acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick, giving the Cowboys a proven outside corner at a position that has already been hit by injuries.
On talent alone, the trade makes plenty of sense.

Porter, 26, has started 41 of 47 career games since Pittsburgh selected him 32nd overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He leaves the Steelers with 165 tackles, three interceptions and 31 pass breakups, including a team-high 14 passes defensed in 2025.
Dallas badly needs that type of help.
The Cowboys entered Week 4 ranked 30th in total defense, had yet to record an interception and were dealing with injuries to Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. NFL Porter gives defensive coordinator Christian Parker a legitimate boundary corner to pair with DaRon Bland and potentially allows Dallas to be far more aggressive with its coverage packages.
The price is where the evaluation gets more complicated.
A future second-round pick is meaningful capital, particularly for a player entering the final year of his rookie contract. Porter and Pittsburgh failed to reach agreement on an extension, and he missed the Steelers’ first three games while dealing with a back issue and a contract standoff. Reports indicated Porter was seeking a massive new deal, meaning Dallas could soon have another expensive decision to make.
That makes this less of a simple rental and more of a calculated gamble.
If Porter returns healthy and plays to his previous level, Dallas acquired a 26-year-old starting corner without surrendering a premium pick in the next draft. If the Cowboys eventually sign him long term, the deal could solve one of their most important defensive problems for years.
If he struggles physically or walks after the season, that 2028 second-rounder suddenly looks expensive.

But with Dallas sitting at 1-2 and a defense that hasn’t played well enough, standing still wasn’t much of an option.
The Cowboys needed a difference-maker in the secondary.
They just bet significant future capital that Joey Porter Jr. is exactly that guy.
