Cowboys Eye San Diego State Corner as Possible No. 20 Pick

Dallas Cowboys draft buzz is building around San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson, a fast-rising prospect who could be in play at No. 20 overall.

Dallas Cowboys draft rumors continue to swirl, and one name gaining real momentum is San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson. He may not be one of the most talked-about defensive backs in the public draft conversation, but around the league, his stock appears to be much stronger than many fans realize. That could put him squarely in the mix for Dallas at pick No. 20 in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Johnson’s appeal starts with the traits teams covet in today’s NFL. He has experience working both outside and in the slot, giving defenses flexibility in how they deploy him. That versatility matters for a Cowboys secondary that has already gone through major offseason changes under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Dallas added Jalen Thompson, P.J. Locke and Cobie Durant, all players who bring adaptability and structure to the back end. Johnson fits that same profile.

He also backed up his tape with a strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he reportedly ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash and posted a 38-inch vertical jump. Those numbers won’t make him a pure testing sensation, but they do reinforce the idea that he has the athletic tools to match up with NFL receivers.

What may be most interesting is where his draft range appears to begin. Even without a known top-30 visit to The Star, Dallas has been mentioned as a realistic landing spot. That could mean one of two things: either the Cowboys aren’t as interested as some believe, or they’re doing what teams often do this time of year and keeping their intentions quiet.

For Dallas, the pick would also come without the extra gamble of moving up the board. The franchise hasn’t spent a first-rounder on a true cornerback since Morris Claiborne in 2012, and that aggressive trade-up didn’t pay off.

If the Cowboys believe Johnson is as polished and scheme-flexible as some evaluators do, standing pat at No. 20 and taking him could be one of the cleaner first-round decisions they make this decade.
