Maybe the Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren’t done with 6-6, 464-pound defensive tackle Desmond Watson just yet.
The Bucs cut the overweight DL back in August, but general manager Jason Licht didn’t rule out his return at the time. Now, that time might’ve come.
Watson’s name appeared on the NFL’s daily transaction report on Friday in a tryout with Tampa Bay. He participated in the Bucs’ offseason program before the team placed him on the non-football injury list ahead of training camp. That didn’t have anything to do with his ability to play; it had more to do with his weight and conditioning.

He was cut from the NFI list in late August ahead of the regular season.
At his Florida Pro Day workout, Watson weighed in at 464 pounds. The Bucs wanted him to reduce his weight so that he could contribute in games. If he can do that, he could be a big help along a depleted defensive line in Tampa Bay.
Back on Aug. 6, Licht indicated that Watson had to hit “some milestones” before he could contribute, and Watson doesn’t want his weight to define his career.

“I feel like my name is etched in history, of course, as the official heaviest player in the NFL, or whatnot,” Watson told the team website back in May. “It’s a good story; at the same time I don’t want it to be my narrative. I want to be known as a football player, and a good football player at that. But it’s nice to be able to make history… I guess again because I did it in college, too. It’s nice to be able to make history but all in all, I am a football player and I want to be known as a good one. So it’s just a process that comes with it, I guess.”
