The Cincinnati Bengals roll into Minnesota to play the Vikings on Sunday in a game where both teams are dealing with roster-crippling injuries.
Rather than the J.J. McCarthy vs. Joe Burrow show, we’ll have the Carson Wentz vs. Jake Browning extravaganza instead. The Vikings quarterback is out with a sprained ankle, and Wentz just arrived in Minnesota three weeks ago to play for the team he grew up cheering for in Bismarck, North Dakota. The former No. 2 overall pick will extend an NFL record he set last season by making a start for his sixth team in six years.
Wentz was taken second overall by the Eagles in 2016 and helped lead Philadelphia to the Super Bowl the following season before being sidelined with an ACL injury. Nick Foles started the rest of the way, including the Super Bowl win. When Jalen Hurts arrived, Wentz was traded to Washington, then traded to Indianapolis.

“Going from being a starter, traded, cut, being a backup behind some future Hall of Fame quarterbacks and seeing things done at a really high level, that’s given me some perspective,” Wentz said. “And also just the perspective of not taking this for granted.”
For the Bengals, Jake Browning will make his eighth start as a pro for the injured Joe Burrow. Burrow is out for the season after suffering a turf toe injury in last week’s win and will have surgery on Friday. Browning went undrafted out of Washington in 2019 and has been with the Bengals since 2023. The former Husky started seven games in 2023 after Burrow hurt his wrist.
“I convinced myself to be extremely confident in 2023 when I got thrown in, because I don’t think there’s been too many quarterbacks to go into a game not feeling good about their own decision-making or ability or whatever and having that go well,” said Browning, who spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons on Minnesota’s practice squad and was cut by the Vikings at the end of training camp in 2021. “So if I didn’t have some delusional confidence in myself, then I probably would have been toast a long time ago.”
