Arch Manning threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as the No. 7-ranked Texas Longhorns rebounded from last week’s loss at Ohio State to beat San Jose State 38-7 on Saturday at DKR Memorial Stadium in Austin.
Manning completed 19 of 30 passes for 295 yards and a pick in his second game as the Longhorns’ starter. He added a 20-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
In last week’s loss to the Buckeyes, he went 10-of-17 for 170 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Parker Livingstone was a favorite target of Manning on Saturday, catching four balls for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Jack Endries added two receptions for 52 yards and two more scores.
Manning and Livingstone connected on an 83-yard score, the longest pass play for Texas since 2017.
“I thought he played aggressively,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “He threw the ball down the field. I thought he did a great job extending plays. He used his arm to create explosive plays. He used his legs, scrambles for a touchdown.”
Manning didn’t agree with his coach’s evaluation of his play.
“Sloppy on my part,” Manning said. “Can’t turn the ball over in the red area. I made a few more plays (than against Ohio State) but once again wasn’t very efficient.”
Last week, the Longhorns had a 24-game streak of forcing a turnover broken against Ohio State. They began a new streak on Saturday in the first quarter with a Jaylon Guilbeau interception in what was the first of four takeaways by the Longhorns’ defense, and the first of his career. Ghilbeau had the ball with him in the post-game presser.
“When I got the interception, I said, ‘I gotta keep that ball,’” Guilbeau said. “It’s my first pick, so I’m gonna sign it and hang it up.”
Walker Eget went 21-of-42 with 188 yards and one interception for the Spartans, and Kyri Shoels caught eight balls for 73 yards. Danny Scudero had seven receptions for 66 yards.
“I thought our kids battled to the end, which is great to see, our resolve and grit,” San Jose State coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “But it’s two weeks in a row that turnovers killed us.”
Next up, the Longhorns host UTEP on Saturday.
