Former TCU safety Jacob Fields surrendered Sunday as a felony assault case tied to an alleged attack on teammate Dozie Ezukanma moves forward.

Former TCU safety Jacob Fields is facing an aggravated assault charge after an alleged locker room attack on Horned Frogs wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma—a disturbing case that has moved far beyond football discipline.

Fields surrendered to Tarrant County authorities Sunday and was booked on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, according to court records cited by multiple outlets. The charge is an allegation, and Fields hasn’t been convicted.

The case stems from an Aug. 13 incident inside TCU’s football facility. Fields is accused of striking Ezukanma, reportedly from behind. Ezukanma later said in a since-deleted Instagram video that he was “sucker punched,” while another person appearing in the video said the receiver lost consciousness after his head hit the floor.

TCU officials reported the incident to campus police the following day. The school subsequently announced that Fields had been removed from the roster because of a team-rules violation.

Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller of PM3 Sports, said his client surrendered voluntarily and has retained an attorney. Miller made clear that Fields’ camp won’t wage a public-relations war while the criminal case unfolds.

“We will not try this case through social media or the court of public opinion,” Miller said. “There is a proper place for the facts to be heard, and we will respect that process.”

The charge abruptly changes the trajectory of a player who arrived in Fort Worth with serious credentials. Fields earned Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors at Louisiana Tech in 2025 after leading the Bulldogs with 92 tackles. He also recorded three interceptions, returned two for touchdowns and broke up five passes.

TCU listed the senior safety at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds after his offseason transfer. Ezukanma, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound redshirt sophomore, remains on the Horned Frogs’ roster.

Coach Sonny Dykes called the incident “out of character” while speaking in Ireland before TCU’s season opener. The Horned Frogs then lost 15-10 to North Carolina, failing to score after their first two possessions.

The scoreboard now feels secondary. TCU has already closed Fields’ football chapter, but the far more consequential legal one is only beginning.
