Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was unexpectedly thrust into action Sunday afternoon after starter Deshaun Watson suffered a frightening hit early in the team’s AFC North showdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Watson exited during Cleveland’s opening possession after Steelers defensive back Jaquan Brisker delivered a high hit as the quarterback released a pass. Officials penalized Brisker for roughing the passer, but the immediate concern centered on Watson’s health.
The Browns starter headed to the blue medical tent for evaluation, forcing Sanders into the game with 13:33 remaining in the first quarter.

However, the change proved temporary. Watson returned for Cleveland’s second offensive possession after missing just four plays.

Sanders Gets Unexpected Opportunity
Sanders entered the contest as Cleveland’s primary backup quarterback, a role he retained despite Dillon Gabriel’s recent return from injured reserve.
The second-year quarterback took over an offense facing significant pressure in an important divisional matchup.
His opportunity was brief and largely unsuccessful.
During Sanders’ four-play appearance, Cleveland committed multiple offensive penalties before tight end Harold Fannin Jr. lost a fumble. Pittsburgh recovered the football, ending the possession.
Sanders returned to the sideline when Watson was cleared to resume playing.
The appearance marked Sanders’ second emergency relief assignment this season. He previously replaced Watson for one play against the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 after the veteran absorbed another significant hit.
Watson Returns After Injury Scare
Watson’s quick return provided some relief for a Cleveland team that entered Sunday’s matchup with a 5-2 record and a share of first place in the AFC North.
The veteran quarterback had helped guide the Browns to five victories through their first seven games, including a 27-24 win over Pittsburgh earlier this season.
Before Sunday’s contest, Watson had completed 136 of 210 passes for 1,482 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions.
His return confirmed that Sanders’ appearance was injury-related rather than a performance-based quarterback change.
What Sanders’ Appearance Means for Cleveland
Sanders entered the 2026 season hoping to reclaim Cleveland’s starting quarterback job after starting the final seven games of his rookie campaign.
The former Colorado standout threw for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions during the 2025 season.
However, head coach Todd Monken selected Watson as Cleveland’s starter entering the regular season, leaving Sanders in the backup role.
Sunday’s brief appearance reinforced Sanders’ position as the next quarterback available if Watson cannot play.
For now, Watson remains Cleveland’s starter, and Sanders returns to his backup duties.

The Browns will continue monitoring Watson following the hit, particularly given the potential concerns associated with head injuries.
What began as a sudden opportunity for Sanders ultimately became a brief interruption in Watson’s afternoon.
For Cleveland, keeping its starting quarterback healthy remains especially important as the Browns pursue an AFC North title.
