The Dallas Cowboys have moved P.J. Locke from the rehab process back onto the active roster, activating the safety from injured reserve Saturday before Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. Dallas also elevated tight end James Mitchell from the practice squad.

The two moves address different concerns. Locke gives Christian Parker’s defense another safety to work with, while Mitchell provides an additional option at a position affected by Luke Schoonmaker’s groin injury.

They’re concrete roster changes after a week filled with questions about who might be available. Neither move, however, establishes a starting assignment or a guaranteed workload.

Another Choice At Safety

Locke’s activation completes a step that remained unresolved in Friday’s Cowboys injury outlook. Practicing during a return window gave him a route back; moving off injured reserve puts him on the active roster.

Dallas has rotated Caleb Downs, Markquese Bell and Alijah Clark opposite Malik Hooker in recent weeks. Adding Locke gives the coaching staff another way to arrange that group instead of relying exclusively on the combinations already used.

That flexibility matters, but the next question is how Dallas uses it. A return can help spread the workload without automatically changing every player’s responsibilities. The personnel packages and actual snap distribution will show where Locke fits.

Mitchell Adds Tight End Cover

Schoonmaker remained questionable after missing Thursday and Friday practices. Elevating Mitchell gives Dallas a contingency if Schoonmaker can’t play, rather than leaving the club to approach kickoff with fewer choices.

Mitchell’s elevation shouldn’t be treated as an announcement that Schoonmaker has been ruled out. Those are separate decisions. Dallas can prepare for an absence while leaving the final availability call open.

The moves also don’t resolve the entire injury picture. George Pickens and Kenny Clark were listed as questionable Friday, while KaVontae Turpin and Dee Winters were ruled out.

For the Cowboys, Saturday’s business was about making more options available before those final game-day decisions. Locke’s activation addresses the safety room, and Mitchell’s elevation offers protection at tight end. Turning that added flexibility into a useful contribution still depends on who dresses and how the coaches deploy them against Arizona.
