Tony Romo’s Wisconsin OWI arrest leaves key questions unanswered as the CBS analyst faces court just days before Cowboys-Ravens kicks off in Brazil.

Tony Romo’s arrest on suspicion of operating while intoxicated has created an uncomfortable cloud over the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback just weeks before the NFL season begins.

Romo, now CBS Sports’ lead NFL analyst, was stopped Thursday evening while driving south on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, the 46-year-old performed poorly during standardized field sobriety tests before being taken into custody, booked and released later that night.

That’s what authorities have disclosed. What remains unknown may ultimately become much more important.

There has been no publicly reported blood-alcohol concentration, toxicology result or confirmation that Romo submitted to a breath test. An arrest on suspicion of OWI also isn’t a conviction, and no finding of guilt has been made.

Romo was back in his home state competing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship at West Bend Country Club. He finished 35-over par and tied for 73rd after rounds that included an 80 and an 82 over the final two days.

Several hours after the tournament concluded, the Burlington, Wisconsin, native was stopped roughly 40 miles away in Milwaukee.

The timing now creates a potentially awkward collision between Romo’s legal situation and his high-profile broadcasting job. His first court appearance is scheduled for September 21 at 8:30 a.m.

Six days later, the Cowboys will face Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The September 27 game will air nationally on CBS and Paramount+, placing it directly inside Romo’s broadcasting orbit. CBS hasn’t announced whether Romo will call the game alongside Jim Nantz, but the network previously promoted the matchup as one of its marquee broadcasts.

CBS declined to comment publicly following the arrest. Romo has also not issued a public statement addressing the incident.

Romo has served as CBS’ top NFL game analyst since 2017 after spending his entire playing career with Dallas. The four-time Pro Bowler threw for 34,183 yards and remains the Cowboys’ franchise leader with 248 touchdown passes.

For now, the facts are limited … Romo was arrested, booked, released and given a court date.

Everything beyond that – including the evidence, any possible penalties and CBS’ next move – remains unresolved.
