Tony Romo’s return to Wisconsin took a sharp turn Thursday night when the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was arrested in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. Romo was stopped while traveling south on Interstate 43 near the city’s high-rise bridge, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

The traffic stop reportedly occurred July 23, only hours after Romo had been competing in the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship at West Bend Country Club. The four-day tournament ran from July 20 through July 23, bringing the Burlington, Wisconsin native back to his home state for another high-level amateur golf appearance.

Golf quickly became an afterthought.

An arrest-detention report obtained by FOX6 stated that Romo was taken into custody after performing poorly during standardized field sobriety testing. The 46-year-old was subsequently booked into the Milwaukee County Jail and released rather than being held overnight. He’s scheduled to appear in court Sept. 21.

No conviction has been entered, and the publicly available reports don’t establish Romo’s blood-alcohol concentration or provide additional details about what prompted authorities to initiate the stop.

Because the arrest was listed as a first-offense OWI, the case doesn’t automatically carry the same criminal classification it would in many other states. Wisconsin generally processes an initial OWI as a traffic violation, though a conviction can still produce serious consequences, including the loss of driving privileges and mandatory alcohol or drug assessment requirements.

For Romo, the timing guarantees that the story will follow him well beyond Wisconsin.

The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback spent his entire NFL career with Dallas, throwing for 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns before retiring after the 2016 season. He then made an immediate jump into broadcasting and became one of football television’s most recognizable voices.
