In a major blow for Oklahoma’s fast-rising season, quarterback John Mateer will undergo surgery to repair a right-hand injury sustained during the first quarter of Saturday’s win over Auburn, the university confirmed.

Despite the injury, Mateer played through, finishing with 271 passing yards, one touchdown, and adding a rushing score. Medical staff determined that surgery was the best path for both his short- and long-term health.

The redshirt junior transfer from Washington State came into this season with high expectations — and he’s been delivering. With 1,215 passing yards, six touchdowns, and just three interceptions in four games, Mateer has been an offensive catalyst for the Sooners. Over his last two seasons, across multiple starts, he’s tallied over 4,300 passing yards, 1,000 rushing yards, and 55 total touchdowns.

While Mateer recovers, head coach Brent Venables has named Michael Hawkins Jr. the starting quarterback. Hawkins, a sophomore who saw action as a freshman, is now poised to lead Oklahoma’s offense during one of the team’s most critical stretches this season.

Expectations are that Mateer’s absence may span multiple weeks, potentially even forcing him to miss the marquee matchup vs. Texas on October 11.

The 4-0 Sooners’ upcoming schedule includes a matchup against Kent State on Oct. 4 before the showdown with Texas. The program remains optimistic that Mateer will return to the field this season after a full recovery.

As Oklahoma navigates this, all eyes will be on Hawkins and how the team adapts without their Heisman-contending signal caller.
