In a game packed with drama, momentum swings, and standout performances, the Virginia Cavaliers delivered their biggest win in years, outlasting No. 8 Florida State 46–38 in double overtime on Friday night in front of 50,107 fans, the program’s largest home crowd since 2023.
Quarterback Chandler Morris was the undeniable catalyst for UVA, accounting for five total touchdowns, two on the ground and three through the air. His final act was a 4-yard rushing score in the second overtime, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass to Trell Harris, giving Virginia an eight-point edge.
Florida State had one final chance to force a third overtime, but quarterback Tommy Castellanos’ fourth-down heave into the end zone was intercepted by Ja’Son Prevard, triggering a wild on-field celebration as Cavalier fans stormed the turf.

“That’s what Scott Stadium is supposed to be like,” said Virginia head coach Tony Elliott. “It felt like a championship kind of game, and that’s what we desire to be as a program.”
The win marked Virginia’s first home victory over a Top 10 team since 2005 – also against the Seminoles – and signaled a major step forward for Elliott in his fourth season.
Virginia jumped out to a quick 14–0 lead in the first quarter, capitalizing on two early takeaways. But Florida State responded with a 21-point surge before halftime, fueled by two Morris interceptions. The back-and-forth battle continued into the fourth quarter, where FSU tied it with just 32 seconds left on a fourth-down touchdown pass from Castellanos to Randy Pittman Jr.
After trading field goals in the first overtime, UVA’s run game and composure took over.

Behind a reshuffled offensive line that included Drake Metcalf starting at center for the injured Brady Wilson, Virginia pounded out 130 rushing yards on 30 carries in the second half and overtime. J’Mari Taylor led with 99 yards and a touchdown, while Xavier Brown chipped in 60 yards on nine carries.
Despite a strong performance from Duce Robinson (9 catches, 147 yards, 1 TD), Florida State dropped to 3-1 (0-1 ACC) after opening the season with a statement win over Alabama.
Virginia now improves to 4-1 (2-0 ACC), firmly planting itself in the early ACC title conversation with its most significant win since 2019.
