The Cleveland Browns will roll into Pittsburgh on Sunday with rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel set to make just his second career start — and history couldn’t be stacked higher against him.
Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin has built a reputation for devouring first-year quarterbacks like a pregame snack. Under his watch, the Steelers are an absurd 27-6 against rookie QBs, including playoffs. Even worse news for Gabriel: in games played at home, that record jumps to 14-1. The only rookie to ever escape Tomlin’s trap in Pittsburgh? None other than Dak Prescott, who pulled off the feat back in 2016.

Gabriel showed flashes in his debut, but facing a Tomlin-coached defense at Acrisure Stadium is a whole different beast.
The Steelers are rested, focused, and coming off a bye — and that’s another nightmare stat for Cleveland. Tomlin owns a 14-4 record after a bye week, with eight straight wins. The man doesn’t just prepare — he reloads.
Meanwhile, the Steelers have enjoyed a dream two weeks without even taking the field.

Since Pittsburgh’s 13-10 win over the Vikings in London, the rest of the AFC North has imploded, combining for an 0-6 record. With the Browns heading to the Steel City, the Bengals facing the Packers, and the Ravens taking on the Rams, there’s a legitimate chance Pittsburgh could tighten its grip on the division even more by Sunday night.
If Gabriel wants to shock the football world, he’ll have to beat history, hostile territory, and one of the best post-bye coaches in the game. The Browns’ rookie is walking into Tomlin’s house — and that’s where rookie dreams usually go to die.
