Jamie Benn isn’t done chasing the one thing missing from his Dallas Stars legacy.

The longtime Stars captain is coming back for an 18th NHL season in Dallas, signing a one-year contract for the 2026-27 season that keeps him with the only franchise he’s ever known. The deal is team-friendly on paper — an $850,000 base salary with up to $1.15 million in performance bonuses — but the bigger number is the one Benn still wants on his résumé: one Stanley Cup.

At nearly 37 years old, Benn isn’t pretending to be the same wrecking-ball winger who once carried the Stars’ offense every night. But he’s still the heartbeat of the room, and Dallas clearly believes that still matters. General manager Jim Nill has leaned into Benn’s leadership for more than a decade, and this move says the Stars aren’t ready to turn the page on their captain just yet.

Benn’s place in franchise history is already locked in. He has played 1,252 regular-season games, scored 414 goals and piled up 992 points. Only Mike Modano stands above him in the Stars’ record book. Add in 80 playoff points across 126 postseason games, and Benn’s career has everything except the championship ending.

That’s what makes this return so compelling.

Dallas has been close — painfully close. The Stars reached the Western Conference Final in three straight seasons before last year’s first-round playoff exit knocked the wind out of a team built to win now. Benn’s 2025-26 season was rougher than usual, too. A punctured lung cost him the first 19 games, and he finished with 15 goals and 21 assists in 60 games, his fewest appearances in a full 82-game season.

Still, the desire never disappeared.

After the playoff loss, Benn didn’t rush the decision. He took time, weighed another year and heard the message from inside the building loud and clear. Coach Glen Gulutzan wanted him back. Tyler Seguin wanted another run beside him. The Stars’ core wasn’t ready to let the captain skate away.

Now Benn gets one more crack at it.

This isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about unfinished business. Dallas still has enough talent to be dangerous, and Benn still brings the edge, presence and playoff scars this group needs.

The Stars don’t need Jamie Benn to be Superman anymore.

They need him to be Jamie Benn — one more time.
