Dak Prescott Becomes Cowboys’ All-Time Passing King, Passing Tony Romo In Eagles Showdown

Dak Prescott just climbed to the top of one of the heaviest stat mountains in pro football. With a 9-yard completion to George Pickens in the third quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles, Prescott officially passed Tony Romo to become the Dallas Cowboys’ all-time leader in career passing yards.

Prescott entered Sunday needing 160 yards to eclipse Romo’s franchise benchmark of 34,183. He got there early in the second half, and in doing so placed his name above a quarterback lineage that reads like a Cowboys museum tour: “Dandy” Don Meredith, Hall of Famers Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, then Romo – and now Prescott sitting alone at No. 1.

The fact that he did it in fewer games than Romo only adds a little extra shine to the moment.

It’s a milestone that also tells the story of Prescott’s decade in Dallas. A fourth-round pick in 2016, he was originally a developmental backup who got shoved into the starting job after Romo’s preseason injury and never let go of it. Since then, he’s been the steady constant through roster resets, coaching changes, and the weekly chaos that comes with being the Cowboys’ quarterback.

Eight times he’s topped 2,500 passing yards, including a monster 4,902-yard season in 2019 that missed Romo’s single-season club record by a single yard.

Critics will always point to the team results in his era — four division titles, five playoff trips, and no breakthrough beyond the Divisional Round. Fair gripe. But if you’re judging Prescott the player, the production has been undeniable.

He was voted Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2016, has three Pro Bowls, multiple 3,500-plus yard seasons, and three years north of 30 touchdown passes. And as of Sunday, he’s also the most prolific passer the franchise has ever had.

Records don’t win playoff games by themselves; everybody knows that. But they do mark eras. And whether you’ve been riding with Dak since Mississippi State or yelling at your TV every other Sunday, this one is real history.

Prescott is now the quarterback standard in Dallas, sitting atop the record book of one of sports’ most storied franchises.
