Dallas reaches its initial 53 by moving on from Sam Williams, Jaydon Blue and several familiar names while reshaping the offensive line.

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t tiptoe toward their initial 53-man roster. They hacked away at it.

Dallas made 39 roster moves Sunday, and two names immediately jumped off the page: edge rusher Sam Williams and running back Jaydon Blue.

Williams, a second-round pick in 2022, was released as Dallas finally pulled the plug on a player whose physical ability consistently seemed greater than his production and availability. Blue, meanwhile, was waived despite entering the offseason as an intriguing young option in the Cowboys’ backfield.

Those weren’t isolated decisions.

Dallas also waived running backs Israel Abanikanda and Phil Mafah, tight end Zack Kuntz, offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete and defensive tackle Jay Toia. Among the vested veterans released were wide receivers Denzel Mims, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Tyler Johnson.

The message is pretty clear: this roster wasn’t built around sentiment or draft status.

Williams is the best example. A second-round investment normally gets every possible opportunity, but the Cowboys decided the roster spot was worth more than waiting another year for the flashes to become consistent production.

Blue’s departure might be even more surprising. Running back appeared to be one of Dallas’ deeper preseason battles, yet the Cowboys dumped three backs during the final reduction. That’s a significant reset for a position group that spent most of August looking crowded.

Dallas also used the weekend to dramatically alter its tackle depth.

The Cowboys traded Nate Thomas to Houston for a 2027 seventh-round pick after Thomas had appeared in all 17 games last season and started four. Dallas then went in the opposite direction by acquiring former Steelers first-round tackle Broderick Jones. The reported deal sends Pittsburgh third- and sixth-round selections in 2027, with Dallas receiving Jones and a fourth-rounder.

That’s not a minor adjustment. It’s an admission that Dallas wanted a different answer behind – and potentially eventually alongside – its current starting tackles.

Two injured Cowboys also survived the cutdown process through roster mechanisms. Linebacker Marist Liufau and cornerback Devin Moore were placed on injured reserve with designations to return.

And remember: 53 on Sunday doesn’t mean 53 on opening day.

Dallas can now attack the waiver wire, build its practice squad and manipulate the bottom of the roster further.

But the first verdict is in.

The Cowboys weren’t afraid to cut recognizable players, abandon previous investments or spend draft capital to upgrade a trouble spot.

For a team trying to push beyond another offseason of questions, that’s exactly how roster competition is supposed to work.
