INDYCAR Debuts Dramatic Single-Lap Firestone Fast Six Qualifying At Arlington

INDYCAR will debut a new single-lap Firestone Fast Six qualifying format at the Arlington street race, adding drama and spotlighting drivers chasing pole.

ARLINGTON – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is about to crank up the pressure in a big way when the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington hits the streets of Arlington, Texas. For the first time, the Firestone Fast Six qualifying segment will shift to a dramatic single-car, single-lap format, raising the stakes for the six drivers battling for pole position.

The change will debut during INDYCAR qualifying in Arlington, March 13–15, and it promises to transform the final phase of the session into something closer to a motorsports shootout than the usual timed scramble.

The first two segments of qualifying will still follow the traditional INDYCAR knockout format, where drivers battle within timed groups to advance. But once the field narrows to the Firestone Fast Six, the rules change completely.

Instead of multiple laps with traffic and strategy in play, each driver will roll out alone and get one shot, one lap, one opportunity to claim the top starting spot on the grid.

Drivers will leave pit lane individually, complete their flying lap beginning and ending at the alternate start/finish line, then return to pit road before the next contender takes their turn. The order will run from the sixth-fastest driver from Segment 2 up to the fastest, meaning the fastest driver from the previous round will close out the session.

The goal is simple: eliminate traffic, eliminate guesswork and put every ounce of attention on the driver behind the wheel.

INDYCAR president J. Douglas Boles believes the format creates a better showcase for the skill required to deliver a perfect qualifying lap.

“This format will allow the competitors and sponsors who earned spots in the Firestone Fast Six the full attention of the broadcast,” Boles explained. “Viewers will be able to see just how precise you have to be to sit on pole.”

The broadcast presentation is also getting a boost. FOX Sports has expanded qualifying coverage to a two-hour window, giving analysts time to break down every run, every risk and every near-miss as drivers flirt with the edge on the tight Arlington street circuit.

FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks said the change reflects a push to tell deeper stories about INDYCAR’s competition and its drivers.

“This updated qualifying format will be an exciting way to showcase the stars of the series and dig deeper into what it truly takes to drive on the razor’s edge,” Shanks said.

There is still flexibility built into the plan. If weather or track conditions create uneven advantages between runs, INDYCAR can revert to the traditional Fast Six format or use earlier qualifying results to determine the starting grid.

But if everything goes smoothly in Arlington, fans may witness a qualifying experiment that could reshape how INDYCAR road and street races decide pole position in the future.
