Alex Palou Dominates St. Pete to Open 2026 IndyCar Season in Style

If anyone thought Alex Palou might ease into 2026 after steamrolling the field last year, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg delivered a blunt reminder: the NTT INDYCAR SERIES still runs through the No. 10 car.

Alex Palou opened the 2026 IndyCar season with a commanding victory on the streets of St. Petersburg, capturing his 20th career win in just his 99th start. The three-time reigning series champion drove his DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to a 12.4948-second triumph, the largest margin ever seen in the 23-year history of the event.

That’s not just winning. That’s sending a message.

Palou started fourth but wasted little time carving toward the front. The pivotal stretch came during the first round of green-flag pit stops. While Scott McLaughlin and Marcus Ericsson cycled through early, Palou and strategist Barry Wanser gambled on an overcut — stretching their stint just long enough to leapfrog the field. When the dust settled, Palou was out front for good.

From Lap 42 onward, it was clinical. He led 59 of the 100 laps on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit and never looked rattled — even when rivals bolted on the softer Firestone alternate tires late in the race.

McLaughlin, driving the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet, brought it home second after starting from pole, while Christian Lundgaard stormed from 12th to claim third in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Kyle Kirkwood and Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five.

The tire strategy added intrigue. IndyCar’s 2026 rule requiring at least two stints on the red-sidewall alternates forced teams to juggle pace versus longevity. Palou used the softer compound early, then switched to the harder primary tires for the final run. On paper, that opened the door for challengers on fresher, grippier rubber.

On track? It didn’t matter.

Kirkwood briefly threatened but never got closer than five seconds. Palou instead widened the gap, showcasing the balance and consistency that powered him to a staggering 196-point championship margin last season.

Rookie Dennis Hauger impressed with a 10th-place finish for Dale Coyne Racing, but the headline belonged to the Spaniard.

One race into 2026, the script looks familiar. If this is how Alex Palou plans to defend his crown, the rest of the IndyCar grid may already be playing catch-up.
