Alex Palou leads a stacked Indianapolis 500 field packed with champions, comeback stories, rookies and redemption shots at IMS.

The 110th Indianapolis 500 is loaded with storylines, and Alex Palou gets first crack at controlling the chaos.

Palou starts from the pole in the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, chasing history as he tries to become another back-to-back Indy winner. But nobody survives 500 miles at Indianapolis Motor Speedway by looking comfortable on Saturday. Sunday is where the place starts taking names.

Alexander Rossi joins him on the front row, though his week took a nasty turn after a Monday crash injured his ankle and forced him into a backup car. David Malukas completes the front row for Team Penske, giving the organization its 50th front-row start in 60 years.

Behind them, the danger is everywhere.

Pato O’Ward remains one of the most dangerous drivers at Indy, even after also going to a backup car. Santino Ferrucci brings seven straight top-10 finishes into the race, while Conor Daly carries Indiana’s hopes as the only Hoosier in the field.

Then there are the legends. Scott Dixon hasn’t won the 500 since 2008, but another victory would create a massive gap between wins. Helio Castroneves, already a four-time champion, can pass A.J. Foyt for most laps completed in Indy 500 history if he reaches Lap 112.

Josef Newgarden starts deep in traffic, but that won’t scare anyone. The two-time winner was fastest on Carb Day and has already proven he can charge from the back.

The international flavor is nasty, too. Felix Rosenqvist, Takuma Sato, Marcus Ericsson, Christian Lundgaard, Mick Schumacher and Dennis Hauger all bring different levels of intrigue. Sato is chasing a third Indy 500 win, while Schumacher continues his smooth transition from Formula One bloodlines to oval racing.

Rookies Nolan Siegel, Louis Foster, Jacob Abel and Caio Collet add more volatility to a field already built for drama.

This isn’t just another Indy 500. It’s a grid full of comeback attempts, family history, young guns and veterans trying to steal immortality.

At Indy, the fastest car doesn’t always win. The toughest story usually does.
