Dallas Mavericks president Masai Ujiri makes his first major move, parting ways with Jason Kidd as Dallas resets around Cooper Flagg.

The Dallas Mavericks are making a massive change on the bench, with Jason Kidd reportedly out as head coach per ESPN’s Shams Charania, as new team president Masai Ujiri begins reshaping the franchise.

It’s a bold first swing from Ujiri, who clearly isn’t wasting time putting his stamp on the Mavericks. Kidd had major highs in Dallas, including a run to the 2024 NBA Finals and a Western Conference finals appearance in 2022, but the organization is now turning the page.

This move feels like it signals something bigger than a coaching swap. It’s a reset.

Dallas has already been living through a new era after the stunning Luka Doncic trade, and now the Mavericks are trying to build a fresh identity around Cooper Flagg, Kyrie Irving and the next version of this roster. Kidd helped guide Dallas through several dramatic seasons, but Ujiri’s arrival always created the obvious question: would he keep the coach he inherited?

Now, apparently, the answer is no.

Kidd’s Mavericks tenure was complicated. He won big, developed strong playoff moments and helped Dallas become a legitimate Western Conference threat. But the pressure around this franchise has only grown, especially after massive roster changes and fan frustration over the team’s direction.

Ujiri is known for aggressive, franchise-shifting decisions. In Toronto, he built a championship team around Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam, Kyle Lowry and a defense-first identity. In Dallas, his first priority may be finding a coach who can maximize Flagg’s two-way ceiling, manage Irving’s scoring brilliance and restore trust with a fan base that’s been through plenty.

The next hire will be enormous.

For the Mavericks, this isn’t just about replacing Jason Kidd. It’s about defining what Dallas basketball is supposed to become under Masai Ujiri.
