Genesis Invitational Leaderboard Heats Up on Saturday as Penge, Bridgeman Chase Win

Riviera Country Club is doing what Riviera does — luring you in with birdies, then daring you to hold on.

Through two rounds of The Genesis Invitational, the headline belongs to youth. Rookie Marco Penge, making just his 11th PGA TOUR start, torched the course with a career-best 7-under 64 to grab a share of the lead. Clemson product Jacob Bridgeman matched him shot-for-shot, closing with three straight birdies to vault into the co-lead heading into the weekend.

And yet, the betting board still tilts toward experience.

Rory McIlroy sits just one stroke back and remains the favorite at +185. When a four-time major champion is breathing down your neck at Riviera, nothing feels safe.

Weather played its part early. Heavy rain disrupted the opening round, and scoring flipped dramatically from Thursday to Friday. After the course yielded barely a tenth of a stroke under par in Round 1, players went low in Round 2, averaging 1.57 under. With sunny skies and minimal wind forecast, expect more red numbers this weekend.

If you’re scanning the board for value, Aldrich Potgieter deserves a long look in the top-10 market. The 2025 Rocket Classic champion has quietly rounded into form after a shaky start to the season. He dropped 35 pounds in the offseason and admitted it took time for his swing to recalibrate. That adjustment showed early, particularly with approach play, including a brutal -8.8 strokes gained on approach at Pebble Beach.

But Riviera is telling a different story.

Potgieter gained 1.49 strokes on approach in Round 2 and sits at T11 after back-to-back 68s. He’s also gained 1.27 strokes putting. For a first-timer on this track, that’s impressive control on notoriously tricky green complexes.

Then there’s Jake Knapp in the top-20 market. Knapp looked lost in the rain on Thursday, losing over two strokes off the tee in a 72. Friday? A 6-under 65 fueled by 2.93 strokes gained on approach and a hot putter. He hasn’t finished worse than T11 in four starts this season.

The kids may be leading, but Riviera rarely crowns a winner without a little chaos first. Buckle up.
