Texas Tech Defense Exposed As Cincinnati Ends Red Raiders’ Perfect Start

Texas Tech entered Saturday unbeaten, ranked eighth nationally and riding a defense that appeared capable of carrying the Red Raiders into the College Football Playoff.

Cincinnati apparently didn’t get the message.

The Bearcats stunned Texas Tech 37-24 at Nippert Stadium, shredding the Red Raiders’ highly regarded defense and handing Joey McGuire’s team its first loss of the season.

Texas Tech fell to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play. Cincinnati improved to 5-2 and 2-2, delivering one of the conference’s biggest upsets of the year.

The most troubling development wasn’t simply the final score. It was how completely Cincinnati dismantled a defense that entered the game ranked among the nation’s best against the run.

Cole Tabb rushed for a career-high 173 yards on 16 carries, including a 58-yard fourth-quarter touchdown that effectively ended any remaining comeback hopes.

The Bearcats finished with 252 rushing yards, exposing major problems with Texas Tech’s tackling and run fits.

Quarterback JC French IV was equally damaging.

French completed 19-of-30 passes for 172 yards and four touchdowns, repeatedly capitalizing on defensive breakdowns.

Cincinnati’s decisive surge came during the second quarter.

Trailing 6-3, the Bearcats scored 21 unanswered points to take a commanding 24-6 halftime lead. French threw three touchdowns during that stretch, including a two-yard scoring pass to Lyviel Waters just before intermission.

Texas Tech briefly threatened to make things interesting after halftime.

Peyton Morgan intercepted French and returned the football 53 yards for a touchdown, cutting Cincinnati’s lead to 24-15.

But the Red Raiders couldn’t capitalize on the momentum.

French responded with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Larenzo Fenner, restoring Cincinnati’s comfortable advantage.

Tabb’s explosive fourth-quarter scoring run delivered the finishing blow.

Texas Tech’s offense wasn’t blameless.

Quarterback Will Hammond threw an interception and lost a fumble, while the Red Raiders struggled to finish drives, settling for four field goals before finally scoring an offensive touchdown in the closing minute.

But the greatest concern for McGuire is obvious.

The defense that had dominated opponents throughout the season couldn’t stop Cincinnati’s rushing attack or consistently prevent explosive plays.

One loss doesn’t eliminate Texas Tech from Big 12 championship or playoff consideration.

However, the Red Raiders’ margin for error has narrowed considerably.

Arizona visits Lubbock next Saturday, giving McGuire’s team an immediate opportunity to respond.

If Texas Tech wants to remain a championship contender, its defense must prove Saturday was an exception rather than the beginning of a disturbing trend.
