Longhorns Collapse Late as Georgia Ends Texas’ Playoff Hopes in Brutal 35–10 Loss

The Texas Longhorns watched their College Football Playoff hopes vanish in Athens on Saturday night, falling 35–10 to No. 5 Georgia in a game that slipped away in the most painful way possible. What began as a gritty, competitive fight turned into a fourth-quarter avalanche, as the Bulldogs outscored Texas 21-0 in the final frame and handed the Longhorns their most discouraging loss of the season.

Texas briefly flirted with momentum midway through the third quarter. Despite a run of penalties, dropped passes and stalled possessions, the Longhorns pulled within 14–10 after linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. intercepted Gunner Stockton to set up a short scoring drive capped by Arch Manning’s touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo. For a moment, Texas had life.

But that moment didn’t last.

Georgia responded with the urgency and physicality of a championship program, marching downfield and converting multiple fourth downs before Stockton hit London Humphreys for a 30-yard touchdown that pushed the lead back to double digits. Moments later, Kirby Smart made the call that ended the game for good — a bold, perfectly executed onside kick that flipped possession and crushed any hope of a Texas comeback. Georgia scored again immediately, and the Longhorns never recovered.

The result was Texas’ third loss to Georgia in two seasons, but by far the hardest to swallow. The Longhorns were competitive for three quarters, yet couldn’t match the Bulldogs’ overwhelming surge in the fourth. Georgia’s 21 unanswered points turned what was a close game into a lopsided final score that accurately reflected the difference in execution down the stretch.

Arch Manning fought through drops and penalties to put together a respectable night, completing 27 of 43 passes for 251 yards, one touchdown and one interception. But the offense rarely found rhythm, and too many drives were sabotaged by mistakes — nine penalties for 58 yards, including several at crucial moments, and multiple drops that stalled momentum early. Ryan Wingo battled through inconsistency to record nine catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. DeAndre Moore Jr. added five receptions for 75 yards, and Emmett Mosley V contributed 66 yards on three catches.

The defense gave Texas chances, particularly during a stretch in which Georgia punted four consecutive drives spanning the second and third quarters. But once the Bulldogs found their footing again, the Longhorns had no answer. Stockton finished with four touchdown passes and a rushing score, carving up Texas with efficiency and composure after a shaky third quarter.

The Longhorns’ only lead came on their opening drive — a promising 13-play march that stalled after a dropped pass forced Texas to settle for a field goal. That early spark proved to be the highlight of the night. After that, Georgia settled in, wore Texas down and delivered the decisive blows when it mattered most.

Texas falls to 7–3 on the season and now must regroup quickly ahead of a pair of home games against Arkansas and Texas A&M to close out the year. The playoff dream is gone, and the margin for error in the SEC has once again shown itself to be unforgiving. For the Longhorns, this one will sting — not just because they lost, but because they had chances, fought back, and still wilted in the final 15 minutes when everything was on the line.
