Aggies Rise From 27 Down as Marcel Reed’s Historic Rally Keeps Texas A&M Perfect and Playoff Dream Alive

The Texas A&M Aggies delivered one of the most unforgettable comebacks in program history on Saturday, rallying from a 27-point halftime deficit to stun South Carolina 31–30 and remain undefeated at 10–0. Quarterback Marcel Reed, overwhelmed by turnovers in the first half, responded with a brilliant second half and finished with a career-high 439 passing yards and three touchdowns.

His performance helped the Aggies overcome a 30–3 hole and keep their College Football Playoff hopes fully alive.

This comeback was the largest in A&M history, surpassing the 21-point rally led by Johnny Manziel in the 2013 Chick-Fil-A Bowl. The magnitude of the turnaround stretched well beyond College Station. Entering Saturday, SEC teams were 0–286 since 2004 when trailing by 27 or more points. After the game, head coach Mike Elko praised his team’s resilience and identity, admitting he was nearly speechless with pride over the way they refused to fold.

Reed’s turnaround was immediate after halftime.

He connected with Izaiah Williams for a 27-yard score to spark the rally, then found Ashton Bethel-Roman for a 39-yard touchdown to cut deeper into the lead. A 76-yard catch-and-run by Bethel-Roman set up another Reed touchdown pass, this time to Nate Boerkircher, and suddenly the Aggies were within striking distance. Early in the fourth quarter, EJ Smith punched in a four-yard touchdown run to give Texas A&M its first lead of the night.

South Carolina still had a chance late after recovering a fumble at their own 1-yard line, but the Aggie defense rose to the moment.

Dalton Brooks and Cashius Howell delivered consecutive sacks to force a fourth-and-long, and LaNorris Sellers’ scramble came up well short of the sticks. That stop allowed the Aggies to seal a victory that seemed unthinkable only an hour earlier. Reed said afterward that the team entered the game seeking revenge after last year’s loss to South Carolina derailed their late-season momentum, and that motivation helped fuel the belief that a comeback was still possible even down 27.

The numbers told the story for A&M’s receiving corps as well. KC Concepcion posted 158 yards through the air, while Bethel-Roman added 139 yards and provided several game-changing plays. For South Carolina, Sellers threw for 246 yards with two touchdowns, but the Gamecocks could not sustain their dominant first-half performance. Head coach Shane Beamer said the collapse was painful, noting that his team controlled the first half but failed to maintain discipline or execution after the break.

The win keeps Texas A&M in a strong position in both the national rankings and the College Football Playoff race.

While the Aggies showed vulnerability in the first half, they also showed championship-level grit in the second, a trait they will need if they hope to finish this historic season with a playoff berth. A&M now returns home to face Samford next week before the massive rivalry showdown against No. 10 Texas on November 28.
