Lightning Strikes Twice, Frogs Strike Last: TCU Outlasts Baylor In Six-Hour Wild One

TCU needed grit, patience, and a whole lot of coffee. After two fourth-quarter lightning delays that stretched the afternoon into early evening, the Horned Frogs closed out a 42-36 thriller over in-state rival Baylor at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth.

Frogs quarterback Josh Hoover set the table with a clean 22 of 31 for 231 yards and three touchdowns.

He hit Jordan Dwyer from six yards with 11 seconds left in the first half, then found Ka’Morreun Pimpton from three yards on the opening drive of the third for a 28-10 cushion. Hoover now sits at 2,024 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season.

The hammer was Kevorian Barnes. The back ripped 106 rushing yards with two touchdowns, including the 5-yard go-ahead run in the second quarter and a 14-yard direct snap burst on the very first snap after the second delay to make it 42-21. Trent Battle added the day’s biggest haymaker with a 65-yard sprint for 35-21 just before the skies shut it down the first time.

Baylor would not die.

Keaton Thomas scooped a fumble for a 24-yard score. National passing leader Sawyer Robertson kept swinging, finishing 25 of 52 for 318 yards and two touchdowns, including a 35-yard strike to Kobe Wilson with 30 seconds left. The Bears recovered the onside kick, but TCU linebacker Namdi Obiazor slammed the door with an interception at 0:13 to finally end it.

A brief downpour and a Baylor fumble set up Barnes for TCU’s first lead. After nearly 2.5 hours of delays, Robertson threw three interceptions, all post-resumption, as the Frogs’ defense tightened.

TCU outlasted the chaos to move to 5-2 and 2-2 in the Big 12, rebounding from last week’s loss at Kansas State. The Frogs have now won nine of the last 11 in Texas’s most-played rivalry and lead the series 60-54-7.
