The Cincinnati Bengals are in quarterback limbo, and Tuesday’s roster move may be the clearest sign yet that a shakeup could be on the way.
The team released veteran quarterback Mike White from the practice squad — a decision that raises eyebrows considering he was the second-most experienced quarterback behind current starter Jake Browning. While some speculate the move was made to retain defensive lineman Howard Cross III, it also opens the door for the possibility of an incoming quarterback via trade.

“We’ll see where it goes,” Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said when asked whether Browning would start Sunday’s matchup against the Packers. “Like all personnel decisions, we’ve got to evaluate it.”
Browning has started the past three games in place of the injured Joe Burrow, and the results have been brutal. The Bengals are 0–3 in those contests and have been outscored by a staggering 113–37 margin. Browning has thrown for 757 yards and six touchdowns, but his eight interceptions have proved costly.
Despite the poor results, Browning could still start this weekend, even if the Bengals make a move at the quarterback position. With Brett Rypien on the active roster and second-year player Sean Clifford on the practice squad, the current QB room lacks a clear upgrade — at least for now.

Taylor emphasized the importance of reps and the difficulty of evaluating multiple quarterbacks during the regular season.
“Every rep is critical,” Taylor said. “It’s very challenging during the season to get multiple guys reps, to evaluate how they’re going to look in your offense, with your receivers.”
Speculation is already mounting over potential trade targets. Could Cincinnati target a veteran like Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, or even former Bengal Andy Dalton? With the NFL trade deadline nearing and the team’s playoff hopes slipping away, the pressure to act is growing.
The Bengals are expected to name a starter for Sunday ahead of Wednesday’s practice, and that decision — along with any possible roster moves — will offer a clearer look at the team’s direction. For now, the message from Cincinnati is simple: change might be coming.
