Bengals Get Chase, Higgins Back as Shemar Stewart Likely Sits

Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are ready for Cincinnati’s opener against Tampa Bay, while defensive end Shemar Stewart is doubtful with a knee injury.

The Cincinnati Bengals should have their star receiving duo on the field for Sunday’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the defense may be missing one of its young pass rushers.

Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are expected to play, giving quarterback Joe Burrow his top two weapons for a matchup with Baker Mayfield and the Bucs at Paycor Stadium.

That’s the biggest piece of good news for Cincinnati after both receivers dealt with injuries during the final stretch of preparation. Chase has been managing a knee issue, while Higgins has worked through a foot injury. Both progressed enough during the week to avoid a game designation.

Chase sat out Friday’s practice, but that was considered a scheduled rest day rather than a setback.

The concern is Shemar Stewart.

The second-year defensive end is listed as doubtful because of a knee injury. Stewart began the week as a full participant Wednesday before being downgraded to limited Thursday and then sitting out Friday’s session entirely.

That progression makes his availability Sunday unlikely.

Stewart appeared in eight games as a rookie, finishing with 11 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and four quarterback hits. Cincinnati has been hoping for a larger contribution from him in Year 2, especially after investing heavily in improving a defensive front that needed more consistent pressure last season.

His likely absence puts more responsibility on the rest of the Bengals’ edge rotation against a Tampa Bay offense capable of creating explosive plays.

There was better news in the secondary.

Cornerback DJ Turner II is expected to play despite dealing with a hamstring issue. Turner was limited during the latter part of the practice week but did not receive a game designation.

That matters against a Buccaneers passing attack that can stretch a defense vertically and force corners to hold up in one-on-one coverage.

For Cincinnati, though, the headline remains the offense.

Having Chase and Higgins available means Burrow won’t have to open the season without either of the receivers who define the Bengals’ passing game. That should give Cincinnati every opportunity to attack a Tampa Bay defense facing its own early-season questions.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET Sunday.

The Bengals may be short-handed along the defensive line, but offensively, they’re entering Week 1 close to full strength.
