Malik Davis was carted off during Friday’s Cowboys practice, creating a new concern in Dallas’ backfield as the team prepares for Week 2.
The Dallas Cowboys may have another backfield issue to sort out before Sunday.
According to DLLS Cowboys’ Clarence Hill, running back Malik Davis was carted off the practice field Friday after suffering an undisclosed injury during the team’s final workout of the week. The Cowboys were still evaluating the severity afterward, but his availability for Week 2 immediately became a concern.

Davis has been part of Dallas’ running back rotation and gives the offense another experienced option behind the top of the depth chart. Losing him would reduce Brian Schottenheimer’s flexibility, particularly on special teams and in change-of-pace situations.
The timing also isn’t ideal.
Final practices are usually when teams are tightening up game plans and settling roles for Sunday. An injury this late in the week can force quick adjustments, especially at a position where workload distribution matters.
Dallas hasn’t yet provided a definitive diagnosis, so the fact that Davis left on a cart shouldn’t automatically be treated as confirmation of a major injury. Teams routinely use carts as a precaution when a player can’t comfortably leave the field under his own power.
Still, it’s clearly something the Cowboys will monitor closely.
Schottenheimer was expected to address reporters after practice, and Dallas’ final injury report should provide more clarity on whether Davis has been ruled out, listed as questionable or needs additional testing.
If he can’t go, the Cowboys could be forced to lean more heavily on their other available running backs and potentially adjust special-teams responsibilities as well.
That makes the next update especially important.

Davis’ role may not generate the same headlines as Dallas’ top offensive stars, but depth can disappear quickly over the course of an NFL season. A Friday injury can turn into a Sunday problem fast.
For now, the Cowboys are waiting on more information.
And until they get it, Malik Davis’ Week 2 status remains very much in doubt.
