Baker Mayfield isn’t pouring gasoline on the fire anymore.
When Kevin Stefanski took over as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, it didn’t take long for old Cleveland memories to resurface. Mayfield’s rocky exit from the Browns during Stefanski’s tenure left plenty of speculation about tension between the two.

But now? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is dialing it back.
“There’s stuff there,” Mayfield admitted in a recent Super Bowl week interview, but he quickly clarified that it’s not personal. According to Mayfield, the motivation isn’t about unfinished business from their Browns days — it’s about the NFC South.
That’s where this rivalry really lives.
Tampa Bay lost its grip on the division for the first time in several seasons, and Mayfield made it clear that any matchup with Atlanta carries weight because of that alone. In his mind, every divisional clash feels like a statement game.
On the field, Mayfield’s resurgence has been undeniable. Since landing in Tampa, he’s revitalized his career, posting one of his most efficient seasons and leading the Buccaneers back into playoff relevance. Meanwhile, Stefanski is now tasked with reshaping the Falcons into a contender.
If there’s tension, it won’t be settled in interviews.

Mayfield knows the only scoreboard that matters is the one inside Raymond James Stadium — and eventually, Mercedes-Benz Stadium. For him, beating Stefanski won’t be about settling old scores. It’ll be about reclaiming the NFC South crown.
And in the NFL, that’s the only revenge that counts.
