Buccaneers Eye Ex 5th-Rounder to Bolster RB Room in Free Agency

NFL free agency is fast approaching, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have clear priorities if they want to rebound from a playoff-less 2025 season.

While much of the offensive core remains intact, the running back room is poised for change. Rachaad White is expected to move on in free agency, and Sean Tucker is also set to hit the open market. That leaves Bucky Irving as the lone proven option under contract — and puts added urgency on finding a dependable complement.

One name gaining traction per FOX Sports’ Greg Auman is Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier.

“Allgeier, 25, has operated in the shadow of Bijan Robinson the last three years, playing second fiddle after rushing for 1,000-plus yards as a rookie in 2022,” wrote Auman. “He’s averaged a good-not-great 4.3 yards per carry on the way to 719 rushing yards per season, and he’s averaged 155 carries since Robinson’s arrival, so there’s less wear on him as well. Could he land with former Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson in Tampa? His 18 career touchdowns show that coaches can trust him near the goal line.”

Allgeier, 25, has spent the last two seasons sharing carries with Bijan Robinson in Atlanta. Before Robinson’s arrival, Allgeier broke out as a rookie in 2022 with over 1,000 rushing yards, showcasing a physical downhill style. Since then, he has averaged 4.3 yards per carry and roughly 700-plus rushing yards per season despite a reduced workload. Importantly, he has totaled 18 career touchdowns, proving he can handle short-yardage and red-zone responsibilities.

That profile could make him an ideal fit in Tampa Bay.

Bucky Irving brings quickness and explosiveness to the backfield, but pairing him with a power runner like Allgeier would give offensive coordinator Zac Robinson flexibility. Robinson and Allgeier already have familiarity from their time together in Atlanta, where Robinson saw firsthand how effective Allgeier can be in high-leverage situations.

The Buccaneers ranked 21st in rushing offense last season, a number that must improve if Tampa Bay hopes to compete in the NFC in 2026. Adding a durable, 220-pound back who thrives between the tackles could help stabilize early-down production and improve goal-line efficiency.

Financially, Allgeier also makes sense. He likely won’t command top-tier running back money, giving Tampa Bay a chance to add quality without crippling its salary cap. At just 25 years old with relatively low mileage and no significant injury history, he represents both value and upside.

If the Buccaneers can secure Allgeier in free agency, a backfield duo of Irving and Allgeier could quickly become one of the more balanced tandems in the conference — and a key step toward getting Tampa Bay back into playoff contention.
