Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders should’ve known it would be a long road to a starting job in the NFL after his historic draft slide this year. After being considered by many to be a potential top 5 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round, where he was selected by Cleveland.
He wasn’t even the first quarterback taken by the Browns in the draft after they selected Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel in the third round.
Coming into the offseason, training camp, and the preseason, Sanders was consistently last on the depth charts, official or otherwise. And now two games into the season, nothing has changed. As a matter of fact, the possibility of his starting might be less likely now.

“I think it depends on how Joe looks over the next couple of weeks,” Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot told host Anthony Kima on the Ken Carman Show. “I don’t think they’re in any rush to get Dillon out there. I think they’re in a stretch right now of four out of five games on the road. They’re facing three really tough NFC North teams, playoff teams, and great defenses. So, they have a lot of things going on right now.
“I think it behooves them to have a veteran presence in there. But certainly, he’s got to make sure that he’s protecting the football. That’s job number one. And if he can do that, then he’ll keep his job.”
The 40-year-old Joe Flacco is the veteran in question here. He won the starting job over Sanders, Gabriel and Kenny Pickett, who has since been traded to Las Vegas.

The next four games for the Browns are brutal. Green Bay, Detroit, Minnesota and Pittsburgh await Flacco, and if he falters, Gabriel could get a chance while Sanders sits on the bench, hopefully cheering his team and teammates on.
