Arkansas Fires Sam Pittman; Bobby Petrino Named Interim Coach

The Sam Pittman era at Arkansas has come to an end.

Pittman was dismissed Sunday following a disappointing start to the 2025 season, ending his five-year tenure with a 32-24 overall record. The former offensive line coach was a surprise hire in 2019, taking over after the Razorbacks hit rock bottom under Chad Morris. His leadership quickly won over fans with his infectious enthusiasm and slogans like “Yessir!” and “Turn that damn jukebox on!”

He ended the program’s 20-game SEC losing streak in 2020 and led Arkansas to nine wins in 2021, but the momentum faded. After a 4-8 finish in 2023, Arkansas brought back former head coach Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator in hopes of reviving the offense. However, inconsistency in 2024 and a sluggish start to 2025 sealed Pittman’s fate. Petrino has been named interim head coach.

Athletic director Hunter Yurachek acknowledged the program’s challenges, citing budget limitations compared to SEC rivals. “The investment we’re able to make in our football program puts us toward the bottom of the SEC in many budget categories,” Yurachek said.

The Razorbacks now join a swelling coaching carousel and must convince top candidates they’re serious about competing at the highest level. Yurachek, who recently landed John Calipari to lead Arkansas basketball, faces another high-stakes hire.

While Petrino’s presence adds intrigue, Arkansas will likely explore several external candidates – some with deep ties to the program – as they look to reset once again.
