Jerry Jones Calls Cowboys Trade Unlikely As Defense Faces More Pressure

Jerry Jones says another Dallas Cowboys trade looks unlikely, leaving Dak Prescott's offense and improvement on defense central to the team's path after Philly.

The Dallas Cowboys may have to find their next defensive upgrade without making another trade. Jerry Jones said Tuesday that he’s willing to add help, but doesn’t expect an outside opportunity to materialize before the NFL’s November 10 deadline.

For Dak Prescott and Brian Schottenheimer, that puts the spotlight back on an offense Jones believes can carry Dallas while its defense develops. Monday’s 38-21 victory over Philadelphia offered encouragement. It didn’t erase the questions facing a team that’s now 3-4.

“It’s unlikely we’ll get the opportunity from outside coming in, but if it’s there, I’ll do it,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.

A Door Open, With No Deal Promised

Jones’ comments leave room for a move. They aren’t a promise that one is coming, and they don’t identify a target. The distinction matters with two weeks remaining before the deadline.

Dallas has already made a significant addition this season, acquiring cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from Pittsburgh on September 30. Another transaction would require a willing partner and terms the Cowboys can accept. Wanting help is only the beginning of that process.

Jones also acknowledged the need for more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. His stated hope is that adjustments to scheme and technique can draw more from the players already in the building. That’s a challenge for the existing defense regardless of whether the roster changes.

The Offense Has A Job, Too

Jones’ broader answer includes keeping the offense productive enough to support that defensive progress. He pointed to the value of running the ball and getting Prescott under center, which can give opponents different looks to prepare for.

That fits the conversation Dallas was having before Monday. Ryan Flournoy’s call for more Javonte Williams highlighted the need to involve more of the offense rather than asking the passing game to supply every answer.

The practical test is consistency. A productive offense can help Dallas manage a game, but it can’t make every defensive possession comfortable. The Cowboys still need their own stops when the scoreboard is tight.

For now, Jones has left the phone line open while putting responsibility on the current team. Dallas can’t build its next game plan around a player who might never arrive.
