The Dallas Cowboys have plenty of recognizable targets. Ryan Flournoy thinks getting Javonte Williams more involved could help them start playing like a complete, more dependable offense again.
Speaking Wednesday as Dallas prepared for the Philadelphia Eagles, Flournoy pointed toward the running game as part of the answer to consecutive losses. Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens remain central to the attack, but the receiver wants defenses to have more to worry about than another pass.
“I think we need to feed him more,” Flournoy said of Williams.
That’s a timely message for a team heading into Monday night at 2-4. Dallas has scored 29 points across its past two games, and its latest defeat exposed how difficult it becomes to recover when the passing game carries so much of the workload.
A Running Back Worth Remembering
Williams finished Sunday’s 23-13 loss at Green Bay with 41 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. His one-yard scoring run cut the Packers’ lead to 17-7 in the third quarter, giving Dallas an opening to make the night competitive.
The Cowboys couldn’t turn that opening into a comeback. Prescott finished with 54 attempts, 258 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Dallas didn’t score its second touchdown until the final minute.
As the Cowboys’ offensive struggles have continued, the challenge has become bigger than simply asking the quarterback to make another play. A credible rushing threat can change how defenders approach passing situations and give the offense another way to sustain a possession.
A Divisional Chance To Respond
For Brian Schottenheimer, the question is how to give the entire offense a chance to contribute consistently.
Balance doesn’t mean forcing an identical number of runs and passes. Dallas still needs to attack favorable matchups with Lamb and Pickens. It means keeping Williams involved enough that opponents have to account for him, particularly while a game remains within reach.
Monday’s meeting at Lincoln Financial Field offers the next test. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Central on ABC and ESPN.
Flournoy’s comments suggest the offense understands the conversation has to include everyone. The next step is turning that discussion into drives that finish before Dallas is chasing the scoreboard again.
