TCU Wastes 484 Yards As Late Fumble Seals Loss To West Virginia

TCU dominated the statistics Saturday afternoon against West Virginia. Unfortunately for the Horned Frogs, football games aren’t decided by total yardage.

They’re decided by points.

And once again, TCU couldn’t finish.

West Virginia escaped Amon G. Carter Stadium with a 24-20 victory after quarterback Jaden Craig lost a fumble deep in Mountaineers territory with 34 seconds remaining.

The defeat dropped TCU to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play, adding another frustrating chapter to a season filled with missed opportunities.

The Horned Frogs outgained West Virginia 484-265, collected 29 first downs and controlled possession for more than 37 minutes.

Craig threw for 372 yards, completing 33-of-47 passes with a touchdown and an interception.

Kari Ashley caught six passes for 118 yards, while Jordan Dwyer contributed 10 receptions for 113 yards.

Those numbers should have been more than enough to beat a West Virginia defense that entered Saturday ranked among the nation’s worst.

But TCU’s offensive production never translated into the points necessary to secure a victory.

The Horned Frogs opened with an impressive 16-play, 91-yard touchdown drive, capped by Craig’s six-yard pass to Ka’Morreun Pimpton.

West Virginia answered behind quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., who scored on touchdown runs of two and 36 yards.

The teams exchanged leads throughout the afternoon before Craig’s two-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter put TCU ahead 20-17.

But the Horned Frogs wouldn’t score again.

West Virginia assembled the decisive possession early in the fourth quarter, covering 75 yards in 14 plays.

A costly TCU unnecessary roughness penalty helped extend the drive before Hawkins connected with former Horned Frogs running back Cam Cook for a 13-yard touchdown.

The Mountaineers led 24-20 with 11:28 remaining.

TCU still had opportunities.

After struggling to produce points in the fourth quarter, Craig led a final possession deep into West Virginia territory.

With the football at the Mountaineers’ 14-yard line, the Horned Frogs appeared positioned to steal the victory.

Instead, West Virginia’s pass rush reached Craig, forcing a fumble recovered by Ben Cutter.

Game over.

West Virginia improved to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while TCU was left confronting another loss that seemed entirely avoidable.

The Horned Frogs committed costly turnovers, missed a field goal and surrendered momentum-changing penalties.

Coach Sonny Dykes now faces a familiar challenge: turning impressive offensive statistics into actual victories.

Because moving the football isn’t TCU’s biggest problem.

Finishing drives, protecting possession and executing when the game is on the line are what continue to separate the Horned Frogs from winning football.
