The Dallas Cowboys are adding experience to Christian Parker’s defensive staff. Brian Schottenheimer announced Monday that Mike Pettine is joining Dallas as a senior defensive assistant, giving the first-year coordinator a familiar voice as the team searches for answers.
Pettine’s arrival is a concrete change after Thursday’s 24-16 loss to Tampa Bay. But Schottenheimer described his role as supporting Parker’s leadership, and said the possibility had been discussed when Parker was hired. This isn’t an announced replacement of the defensive coordinator.
A Familiar Voice For Parker
Pettine and Parker worked together in Green Bay, where Pettine coordinated the defense and Parker served in defensive quality control. Schottenheimer also knows Pettine from their time together with the New York Jets.
Those connections matter. Dallas is bringing in someone who already understands the people involved, rather than asking an unfamiliar coach to build those relationships during the season.
Pettine previously ran defenses for the Jets, Bills and Packers, served as Cleveland’s head coach and most recently worked in Minnesota. He’s returning after stepping away from coaching following the 2025 season.
The Problems Still Need Fixing
The Cowboys have gone five games without an interception and recorded just five sacks. Opponents are averaging about 168 rushing yards per game, leaving Dallas with problems both on the ground and in creating disruptive plays.
Adding another coach won’t erase those results. The value will come from translating experience into clearer assignments, better preparation and cleaner execution by the players already on the field.
As our look at the pressure on Schottenheimer noted, identifying weaknesses is only the first step. Pettine’s hiring gives Dallas another resource for the work that follows.
More Adjustments Are Coming
Schottenheimer also said personnel adjustments are ahead, but didn’t identify them publicly because of competitive concerns. Until those details emerge, it’s too soon to declare which players will gain or lose roles.
Dallas next travels to Green Bay on Oct. 18. That makes the immediate challenge straightforward: use the extra preparation time to make the defense more reliable.
Pettine brings a lengthy résumé and existing relationships. Parker remains the coordinator. Now the Cowboys need that additional experience to show up in their performance.
